Barbie vs. Oppenheimer

These two super productions will be disputing at the box office for numbers.

The two most anticipated movies of 2023 will be released on the same day. You read that right; Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, and Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, are coming out internationally on July 20th, 2023. However, this leads us to wonder, why haven’t they changed dates?

Both filmmakers are so recognized that, without a doubt, each theater session will be filled to the brim. Greta Gerwig, known for her creativity and ingenuity in her works like Lady Bird and Little Women, now presents Barbie: an insight into the iconic doll’s life. Set in “Barbieland,” the film portrays all versions of Barbie living happily. Until; the main Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, realizes she does not fit into the Barbieland and is expelled and forced to live in the real world.

Christopher Nolan, known for his complex storytelling and bestseller blockbusters such as Interstellar and The Dark Knight, presents Oppenheimer. Contrasting the colorful Barbie, Oppenheimer tells the dark story of the man behind the bomb. During World War II (1940-1945), J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American physicist, was involved in the Manhattan Project, designed to construct the atomic bomb responsible for the catastrophe in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The main reason the movies are set to create intense dispute is the fantastic all-star cast participating in both of them. Barbie has actors such as Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrel, Emma Mackey, and Michael Cera. At the same time, Oppenheimer has the participation of Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, and Rami Malek.

Rumors circled that the dispute about the release date origins from a supposed rivalry between Nolan and Warner Bros, Barbie’s producer. Others disagree and state that this argument is purely a marketing move. This odd pair, which are pure dichotomies in every way possible, has generated more talk than they would if released a week apart.

What do you think, and which one will you watch first?
