The ongoing conflict known as the Israel-Hamas war has been happening since October 7, 2023. After Hamas led an attack on Israel, the country declared a state of war. Ever since, the population has lived in a state of terror. There have been several attempts to de-escalate the conflict since its start; nevertheless, no strategy has been entirely successful. The most recent possible solution to the Israel-Hamas war was a proposed resolution by Algeria to be put to vote during the United Nations Security Council meeting. This resolution sought a “humanitarian ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas, which also included the immediate release of all of the hostages. However, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that if the new resolution proposed by Alegria were actually to be put to vote during the Security Council meeting, the United States would veto it.
It has been appointed that the US has used its veto power at least 34 times to block the UN Security Council resolutions that were critical to Israel. The first UNSC draft resolution put to the vote since the Israel-Palestine war, held on October 18, was when the United States took the action of blocking the calling for “humanitarian pauses,” which the other twelve countries voted in favor of. While looking into the country’s background it is significant to note how the majority of the resolutions since 1945, which the US, China, and Russia have vetoed, were drafted concerning the conflict of Israel and Palestine. In terms of the actual plans of the North American country, Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated that the resolutions could counter the goals that Washington aims to achieve through diplomacy in talks between Hamas and Israel.
Concisely, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador, stated that the United States wouldn’t support a UN resolution proposed by Algeria for the Gaza ceasefire because it wouldn’t help free hostages in the Israel-Hamas conflict. She affirmed that the US is seeking a most efficient agreement with Israel and Hamas to achieve their aims.
